Why I Couldn’t Track My Online Order Until It Arrived

I recently placed an online order and wanted to track when it would arrive. My goal was to use the tracking number provided with my order to see the shipping progress and know when to expect it. After placing the order, I received a confirmation email that included a tracking number. I assumed I could just use that number right away to see where my package was. However, when I tried to track it, I got a message saying the tracking number could not be found in the system. At first, I thought I might have entered it incorrectly, so I tried copying and pasting it again. I also tried using the tracking link directly from the email, but it still didn’t work. There was no explanation for why the number wasn’t recognized, which made it confusing. Over the next few days, I kept checking the tracking number to see if anything had updated, but it continued to show the same error. I had no way of knowing if my order had shipped, where it was, or when it would arrive. Eventually, the package just showed up at my door without ever being trackable. While I did receive the item, the experience felt unreliable because I had no visibility into the delivery process.

One important concept here is visibility, which means that important system information should be clearly available to the user. In this case, I had no way of seeing where my order was at any point during delivery, which made the experience uncertain. Another concept is feedback, which refers to how the system communicates what is happening. The system only showed a vague “tracking number not found” message, without explaining whether the order had shipped or what I should expect next. This also relates to mental model, which is how users expect a system to behave. I expected that once I received a tracking number, I would be able to track my package immediately. When that didn’t happen at all, it broke my expectations and made the process feel unreliable. Finally, the system had poor error messages, since it didn’t guide me toward any solution or explanation, leaving me to guess what was happening.
